At Babue, our carriers are inspired by the rhythms of Zimbabwean caregiving traditions. Both the Mbereko and the Gogo are designed to hold babies close to the caregiver's body while supporting the natural connection between parent and child.
But each carrier tells a different part of the story.
The Mbereko
The Mbereko is inspired by the traditional cloth wrap used across many African communities to carry babies on the back.
For generations, mothers wrapped their babies onto their bodies as daily life unfolded around them. From this place of closeness, babies felt the rhythm of walking, the warmth of the caregiver's body, and the sounds of everyday life.
The Mbereko reflects this ancestral wisdom. Its wide wrap-style straps allow the fabric to mold around the caregiver's body, creating a carry that feels soft, supportive, and deeply connected.

The Gogo
The Gogo carrier is inspired by the strength and wisdom of grandmothers. In Zimbabwe, a Gogo is often the quiet guide in the background, the one who has carried babies before and helps support new mothers as they learn.
The Gogo carrier reflects this sense of stability and support. With lightly padded straps and a more structured feel, it offers a comfortable carry that allows caregivers to move confidently through daily life with their baby.
Like the steady hands of a grandmother, the Gogo is designed to hold both baby and caregiver with ease.
A Circle of Care
Together, the Mbereko and the Gogo tell a deeper story. The Mbereko represents the environment that holds the child. The Gogo represents the wisdom that teaches us how to hold.
Both remind us of something our ancestors always understood and modern neuroscience confirmed: children grow best when they are surrounded by many hands and many hearts.
The womb begins the holding. The Mbereko continues it. Gogo carries the wisdom. And the village sustains the child.
Differences Between Gogo and Mbereko
The Gogo
- ✔Light padding for shoulder comfort
- ✔More structured feel
- ✔Softer, flexible feel that moves with your body
- ✔Often preferred by dads because there is less fabric around the shoulders
The Mbereko
- ✔Wrap-style shoulder support
- ✔More wrapping possibilities and finishes
- ✔Soft, moldable fabric that moves with your body
Both carriers provide a very close, supportive carry, but the main difference is how the shoulder straps wrap and distribute weight.
